Take Your Time

The manipulator might use tactics of speed or time pressure to get what they want. This is done in order to distract their victims and not give them a chance to really think everything over.

By taking your time, you allow an opportunity to really make the right decision. You make the manipulator know that you aren’t going to be scared into saying yes or no. If you’re not sure what to say, always just tell the manipulator that, “you’ll think about it.” This is not giving them a definitive yes or no. It’s letting them know that you’re actually going to put time into analyzing the request, deciding if it’s something that’s actually going to be good for you or not. Many people will be afraid to say this, as they don’t want to upset anyone else. You have to know that your feelings take priority, and anyone that is really rushing you for an answer might have manipulation motives.

Many jobs and bosses will use speed tactics to get what they want. They’ll offer you a position with a certain salary but tell you that you need to decide quick, so they can let someone else know if they got the job. Anyone that tries to sell something will use time pressure, making the person questioning their purchase know that others might buy it up first. This kind of manipulative tactic works well, but if it’s there, it’s usually best to just take your time in making a decision.
